One of the best ways to green your interior space is by installing eco-conscious flooring. Of course, if you already have flooring in good condition then the most sustainable thing you can do is to keep it. But if you’re in the market for a flooring update, keep these three things in mind.
- Certifications. Many flooring options now come with certifications such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or GreenGuard. Keep an eye out for these labels, which show that respected third-party organizations have deemed a product eco-responsible.
- Durability. No matter how many certifications a flooring type has, it isn’t going to be sustainable if it isn’t also durable. This also means choosing the right type of flooring for each room. For example, wood flooring in a bathroom definitely won’t last.
- End of Life. Not only do we need to think about where our flooring products come from, we also need to think about what happens to them when their life span is over. For example, can it be recycled? Repurposed? Maybe it’s biodegradable?
